Playing golf isn’t about the elite or well to do alone in the society.
This statement was made fact by the ongoing golf championship in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The tournament, which started today, 4th and would end on the 8th, at Ibadan Golf Club, kicked off with a glamourous opening ceremony, with today focused on the empowerment of over 220 local women around Ibadan metropolis.
Senator Abiola Ajimobi, executive governor of Oyo State, represented by the honourable commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Toye Arulogun, said that state government was very pleased to be associated with the event because of the insistence of the organisers in hosting it in Oyo State, while others would have opted for Lagos State or Abuja, considering the high tendency of bigger sponsors in those states.
In addition, Sen. Ajimobi advised the beneficiaries of the grant to be prudent in spending in order to encourage the organisers to do more next year.
In his words, the honourable commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Abayomi Oke, said, “I appreciate the organisers for the laudable initiative. I would hereby imploy those fortunate to benefit make judicious use of the donated funds.”
The commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Tinuke Osikoya, while also advising on prudent use of the grant presented cheques to the beneficiaries.
Organised by Ibadan Mesiogo Championship with this year’s event tagged ‘Road to Mongomo’, the local organising committee is chaired by Mr. Olawale Opayinka, CEO 3e Actuaries with other committee members.
“Ibadan Mesiogo Championship has over 110 professional golfers for the tournament,” Mr. Olawale Opayinka said, “with over 40 of them as foreigners.”
While interviewing some of the beneficiaries, Fatimo Ramon said, “I am very happy to have benefited from this. May God bless them for putting smile on my face.” When asked what she intended using the money for, she said, “I sell raw foods. And I plan using the money to support my business.”
Another beneficiary simply known as Mummy Kingsley said that as a raw and fried plantain seller, her joy knew no bounds when she was called up for the grant. While she also prayed for the organisers, she emphasised that the money would go a long way in helping her business.
Among notable guests at the event were Captain of Ibadan Golf Club, Barr. S.I. Salami, SAs to Oyo State government, Lady Captain Grace Brown to mention few.
Members of the Oyo State cultural centre entertained at the event, while Olamide Adeniji was the MC.
