Gbobaniyi Femi Davies, one of the Nigeria’s most respected media practitioner and socialite celebrated his 50th birthday on Saturday, November 10.
There is barely a gathering or industry the name of this illustrious son of Ogun State, or FM as he is popularly called by his friends, doesn’t ring alot of bells; political, social and most especially the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood.
Born in Lagos in 1967, the ace journalist also grew up in Lagos, where he had his primary and secondary schools education.
However, November 10, 2017 would always be a date to remember for all his family, friends and the social media platforms as congratulatory messages put the day as trending event on major online platforms.
It was a special night as notable guests were treated to sound of live bands, delicious foods and lots of drinks!
The event which took place at the prestigious Lagos Airport Hotel, Oranmiyan Hall, Lagos was well attended with Gbenga Adeyinka and Yemi Sodimu gloriously delivered as masters of ceremony.
Present at the birthday gig were the aged mother of the celebrant,Ooni of Ife, who was represented,Zaaki of Arigidi Akoko, HRM Oba Yisa Olaonipekun,Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland Designate,Aare Gani Adams, Babalaje Wale Saranda, and many traditional chiefs.
Others like Barr. Tunde Buraimoh, when called upon to talk about the celebrity, said, “Femi is a friend and brother. Our paths crossed about 16years ago when I was serving as local government chairman. Even though we met in not too pleasant manner, but being the person Femi Davies is, we became the best of friends.
“He is a man of integrity and not given to unpleasantness. I therefore congratulate Femi Davies on this milestone in his life and wish him the best going forward.”
In his comment, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon described Gbobaniyi as a man of uncommon integrity, saying Femi Davis is ‘always a happy person’ to be with.
Right activist and spokesperson of the Pan Yoruba Socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin in his words described Femi Davies as one of the top guns in entertainment journalism. He is a friend of the world and he deserves to be honoured. He also went ahead to declare that FM has never been caught in any fight and wished him more years in life.
The celebrant’s mother also gave some words about her son and used the opportunity to pray for him.
Yemi Shodimu, the popular Nigerian dramatist, television presenter, director and film maker stated that whenever he needs getting things fixed, the first name that pops up is Femi Davies.
According to Aare Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, he met him in South Africa where he realised they both had something in common and a successful friendship started off. “Femi became my confidant because he is not someone that could easily be swayed by anything if he believes in something. He’s an invaluable organiser,” Aare Gani Adams said after which he prayed for him.
Praise Davies, celebrant’s daughter, added her voice, “When I am asked to talk about my father, I’m always short of words. I learnt to be diligent and humble from my dad. Despite the fact that he’s achieved so much, he is very humble. I am so proud to be his daughter and he has done so much in boosting my self confidence. Daddy I love you and pray for grace to always make you proud.”
His stints in journalism, after his education, was boosted when he joined Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation and Lagos Television in 1989 before he later went on to join other states owned broadcast stations and advertising industry around Nigeria.
A former student of Ogun State Polytechnic, (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), Abeokuta, Ogun State where he had his Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication in 1993, Otunba Davies is currently the CEO of Perfect Reflections Company, publishers of Metronews, an online news and entertainment portal.
