It is no longer news that the veteran Nigerian journalist, Peter Thomas, has been down since 2017 and in urgent need of financial assistance to undergo surgery.
But what is worthy of mention is the enormous interventions of well meaning Nigerians especially journalists, who have been rallying around raising the needed funds for their colleague.
An exclusive social media group for veteran journalists in Nigeria, Metronews Chat Room, was able to achieve a milestone through its ever supportive members who reside in Nigeria and other parts of the world by bringing Peter’s case to the attention of highly placed individuals in the Nigerian society through one of its member, ThisDay newspaper’s Mr. Wale Olaleye.
According to information made available to us, the Senate president, Sen. Olusola Saraki, donated N1million naira, while the minister of Works, Power and Housing, Barr. Babatunde Raji Fashola also did the same; he donated one million naira. Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the minister of Mines and Steel Development, gave N1million naira to also support Peter Thomas’ surgery, while the deputy senate president, Mr. Ike Ekweremadu capped it with the sum of N500,000.
In total, the sum of N3,500,000 has been raised, this is aside the contribution being made toward same cause by each member of the group.
For the soft spoken Peter Thomas to be on his feet again and undergo chemotherapy to check the cancerous growth, there is still a long way to go to reach the N7million mark.
We hereby appeal to the general public to help support this cause.
To do so, kindly pay into Zenith Bank account number 2004857059, savings account under the name Peter Thomas.
Metronews Chat Room is an initiative of the popular and veteran journalist, Otunba Femi Davies.
