Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustainable food production.
The governor said this will be the impetus driving the various activities in the Agricultural sector.
He said the activities were backed with renewed commitment to support initiatives for revamping and developing the coconut industry to global standard and recognition.
Amobode, who was represented by Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, spoke on Sunday at the seventh Coconut Heritage Festival in Badagry.
The governor noted that taking coconut to another level is long overdue, especially from the viewpoint that Nigeria ranks 18th among coconut producing countries in the world with Lagos producing 70 per cent of total production.
He said: “A major step towards achieving this goal was the establishment of Lagos State Coconut Development Authority (LASCODA) with the mandate to uphold the state’s comparative advantage in coconut production, utilisation and commercialisation within the upstream and downstream facets.
“In a bid to expand the coconut processing operations and to further collaborate with the private sector, we have distributed coconut processing equipment to coconut processors in 12 local government areas and local council development areas (LCDAs) as part of our empowerment programmes in the coconut value chain.”
