President Muhammadu Buhari urged media houses to uphold professionalism especially as the reports on the general elections are concerned.
President Buhari, on his official Twitter page, said that journalists in the country should report only reliable and verifiable news that are factual and stay away from fake stories or conjectures.
The president said this on Thursday, January 10, just when it is less than six weeks to the elections.
He further said that as long as democracy is concerned, journalism is an important part of the Nigerian society.
Meanwhile, we reported that widespread vote-buying could mar Nigeria’s forthcoming general elections, the United States had warned.
The warning was given by the US deputy representative to the United Nations, Jonathan Cohen, during a UN Security Council meeting on West Africa, on Thursday, January 10.
We gathered that Cohen urged politicians, civil society groups and community leaders to ensure that the election was free and fair.
He said: “The United States sees a risk that widespread vote-buying could challenge the integrity of the election process. “We are concerned about reports of intimidation and partisanship by security forces, heightened insecurity and inability of internally displaced persons or persons with disabilities to vote.”
