A police sergeant attached to the Chairman of the Ipoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, Monday Ehijie, and two yet-to-be-identified persons have reportedly been killed in a cult-related fight.
The policeman was allegedly killed alongside two of his cult group members on Saturday, while engaged in a fight with a rival cult group.
Our correspondent learnt that the cop was killed at the Namayo junction, Upper Sakpoba.
The parents of the late policeman were said to have warned him to stop his cult activities after he joined the force, but to no avail.
A source said the fight occurred between two rival cult groups, adding that the policeman was fighting with his group but that the rival group traced him to the Namayo junction after the fight had ended and shot him and two other persons dead.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, confirmed that the killings were cult-related and that the deceased police officer was a cultist.
He stated, “It was alleged that the officer belonged to a cult group; he was fighting on the side of his cult group with a rival cult group. That was what led to his death. Three people lost their lives in the fight – the police officer and two others.
“I have gone to see his family. It is a cult killing and the officer was a cultist.”
Odumosu said efforts were on to arrest the killers, warning that cultists would have no hiding place in the state.
