Ekiti State Government has begun the sale of subsidised fertiliser to farmers in the state.
The state entered into partnership with Tax Agro and Chemicals Limited of Nigeria for the production of fertiliser for farmers across the state.
The state Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said, “Comprehensive research and analysis of Ekiti State soil was done before coming up with the brand of fertiliser,” which would be available to farmers at N5,500 per bag.
Fayemi, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Abiodun Oyebanji, spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday at the commencement of sales of the first batch of 6,000 bags of 20:10:10 NPK fertiliser, saying the step was targeted at ensuring bumper harvest and profitable agricultural business with the ultimate goals of food security and wealth creation.
The governor said his “determination to support farmers to boost their yield informed the decision to make subsidised fertilisers available to Ekiti farmers.
“The government is working assiduously to provide enabling environment that will enhance food security, create employment opportunities, empower women and youths, reduce poverty and as well create wealth.”
Fayemi, who noted that fertiliser was one of the most expensive farm input and a key component in profitable business, urged the farmers to make judicious use of the fertiliser and not to sell them.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Folorunso Olabode, said measures would be put in place to ensure the fertiliser was used within the state.
The Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr Alagbada Adeniran, who thanked the governor for prompt response to farmers’ needs, assured him of support to the administration for success of policies and programmes, especially in the area of agriculture.
