Russian Defence Ministry released an image, Friday, of Russia-led airstrike which reportedly killed leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on May 28.
The strikes reportedly targeted a meeting of high-ranking IS officials, where al-Baghdadi was reportedly present.
“As a result of the attack conducted by Russian Aerospace Forces aviation in the southern suburb of Raqqa in late May, 30 IS commanders and up to 300 militants from their personal security were eliminated,” the official statement of the Russian ministry said. The MoD will now investigate the reports.
ISIL’s official media wing has yet to issue a statement regarding Baghdadi’s alleged death.
