During the ongoing Ibadan Mesiogo Open Championship tagged IMEGA 2017, one of the contenders stands out. She is the sixteen year old Georgia Oboh, daughter of Mr. Godfrey and Mrs. Evelyn. Gerogia is the only teenager and also the only person whose family member is her caddy in the tournament. In an exclusive short but interesting interview with OJELABI VICTOR, she gave us a peep into her world. Excerpts…
Can we meet you and for how long have you been playing?
My name is Georgia Oboh. I have been playing for the past ten years.
Ten years? How old are you then?
I am sixteen years old.
So it means you’ve been playing since when you were six?
Yeah. It was so because when my parents were out playing golf, there was no one to babysit me for the duration of play. So the only option opened to my parents then was to take me along and through that I was encouraged to pick up the club and the rest was history.
I noticed your dad was your caddy, how does that make you feel?
I feel great about seeing my parents around me when I play. My mum also does that for me too.
What feelings do you have when you swing a club?
I don’t feel anything. My mind is always focused on the calculations on how best to pot the golf; the distance and anticipated effect of the landscape on the golf.
Did use use any specific plan to stay on track? How do you handle weeks when you are too busy to practice?
I am free during the off seasons, which means my practice sessions are not as heavy. But I normally practise very early in morning, sometime late at night, weekends and then during the holidays.
And how do you balance your education and pro golfer?
I am not a professional golfer yet but I do aspire to be one in future. And I am able to get the two not to clash.
Tell me about the course you played here in Ibadan Golf Club in comparison with what you’re used to outside the country.
I like the landscape and the green. As a matter of fact, it’s here I have seen hill for the first time.
Really? Where are you from in Nigeria?
Edo State, Ishan to be precise.
Can speak the language?
A little.
And you’ve never been to your hometown before?
No, I haven’t.
Is it safe to blame daddy and mummy for that?
(Smiled) No, I don’t think so because I wasn’t born here. I was born in Manchester in the United Kingdom and the few times I have been in Nigeria was whenever I came for golf tournaments.

What do you wish to become in future?
Golf first; I want to be a pro golfer, and then study psychology.
Psychology? No wonder you’re good at golf!
(Smiled) Yes.
How does playing golf influence your character?
Golf teaches you to see the whole picture of every situation in life. The most important take away is the fact that it helps you think ahead.

Your take on IMEGA 2017?
The tournament is a good way for local golf players and some few international ones to compete together and learn from each other in having a shot at the prize money.
Do you set goal for the tournament?
My ultimate goal is to win.
What is your guiding rule to life?
Love your family because when it turns out there is no more money or golf, you would always have them.
And is there anyone of them you’re looking up to?
Tiger Woods is one player I cherish.
