It has been observed that most of the challenges facing local Governments in the country are as a result of lack of autonomy as a third tier of government.
A leader of the delegation from department of Local government Affairs, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Presidency, Mr. Kayode Adebayo stated during a visit to Kagarko Local Government in Kaduna state on assessment tour of projects executed by the council.
Mr. Kayode lamented that some local Government council secretariat has been over grown with weeds as a result of lack of activities for staff to engage in.
He said the assessment was with a view to coming up with the best local Government in terms of the number of project which also have bearing to lives of people.
According to a press release from the information office of the Local Government, Mr. kayode said the assessment will also include Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, which will indicate wether or not the local Government was over depending on revenue from the Federation Account for survival.
Responding, the Administrator of the Local Govt., Alhaji Kabir Yusuf who was represented by the Head of Adminstration, Mr. Sani Bello said the council embarked on twenty different projects, since 2005, but was able to complete eleven.
Yusuf, said the council was creating impact even with the partial degree of autonomy it enjoys from the state government.
He, however, appreciated the state Government under the leadership of Governor Nasir Ahmed El-rufa’i for strengthening the local government system to impact on the lives of the people, the press released concluded.
