“Mai Martaba” explores profound themes of love, greed, and betrayal set against the backdrop of an ancient African kingdom that once thrived through the Trans-Saharan trade exchange.
However, this prosperity was short-lived due to intense internal power struggles among the influential Agadashawa ruling clan. The film was shot on location in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria, adding authenticity to its rich narrative.
The committee noted that the film was produced by Prince Daniel and was selected for its relevant themes, including the importance of diverse voices in decision-making and the value of inclusive leadership.
Furthermore, its visual and technical appeal played a significant role in its selection. “During a voting process among the 15-member committee, ‘Mai Martaba’ received the highest number of votes,” the statement detailed.
Looking ahead, the International Film Festival Executive Committee will determine the next steps for the film as it prepares for the Oscars.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live to over 200 territories worldwide.
As “Mai Martaba” represents Nigeria on this prestigious global stage, it highlights the growing recognition of African cinema and storytelling, reinforcing the importance of showcasing diverse narratives in the film industry.
