Impeached Lagos Speaker Mudasiru Obasa be investigated by anti-graft agencies over corruption allegations
Following the impeachment of Mudasiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, opposition parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have called for a full investigation by anti-graft agencies into the allegations of corruption levelled against him.

Obasa was ousted by a majority of the House members, who cited corruption and misconduct among other reasons.
Hakeem Amode, the Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, stressed the need for transparency, urging that the Lagos State Assembly formally submit a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the former Speaker.
Amode demanded a clear and honest probe into the allegations of false enrichment and other financial misconduct, emphasizing that Lagosians deserve to know the details.
Similarly, LP Secretary Sam Okpala echoed the call, asserting that Obasa should face legal consequences if there is a legitimate case against him, but not as part of a politically motivated witch-hunt.
Chief Bode George, a senior PDP leader, added that Obasa’s actions, particularly his disrespect towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the 2024 budget presentation, were “despicable and dishonourable.”
Obasa, who is reportedly on vacation in the United States, has not publicly responded to the impeachment, and his loyalists have remained silent.
Inside sources suggest that Obasa’s impeachment was a result of his strained relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu and his controversial tenure in the Assembly.
Allegedly, his removal was orchestrated after being presented to President Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the APC.
The situation in Obasa’s Agege constituency, where he had strong political support, remains tense, with divided factions in his camp.
Despite this, the general public seems unfazed by his impeachment, with many residents noting his contributions to local infrastructure but expressing indifference to his removal.
In the wake of the impeachment, security has been heightened around the Lagos Assembly complex, and several of Obasa’s supporters who attempted to protest his ouster were arrested and briefly detained.
The new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has since met with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to seek their endorsement.
