Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says restructuring of the nation’s security architecture is the only means by which Nigerians can truly get the safety of lives and property that they so desire.
Speaking at the Sobo Sowemimo Annual Lecture 2020 edition organized by Abeokuta Club on Friday, Obasanjo noted that at this point the country’s fate is in the hands of every Nigerian.
At the event titled “COVID-19 and security issues in Nigeria: the way forward,” the elder statesmen urged Nigerians to put on their thinking caps in an attempt to chart a new course for socio-economic development.
According to the former president, “the federal security architecture structured and operated by the current government can not give hope to any person or community, let alone security assurance in Nigeria.
Our fate lies in our own hands. Security architecture, structure and organization will devolve further responsibility for protection on the population, local and state authorities in the reform and restructuring.
“I have recently noticed from some writers about the security situation in the North, sadly, the feeling or attitude of ‘it serves them well.’ We must not be gloating at other people’s difficulties or misfortunes, rather we must be emphatic.
“Wherever Nigeria has insecurity, it has to be of concern to us all. It should not be the ‘am alright Jack’ mentality or ‘it serves them right’ attitude. I think ‘we ‘re all in one bad boat and we’ve got to put all our hands on deck to fix it.’
