Senate President Godswill Akpabio mourns the passing of Edwin Clark, calling him a true patriot and defender of justice in Nigeria
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has described the passing of elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark as a monumental loss to Nigeria, the Niger Delta, and all who value unity, fairness, and national progress.

In a heartfelt condolence message on Tuesday, Akpabio paid tribute to the revered leader, emphasising that Clark’s dedication to Nigeria’s unity and development will remain evergreen in the hearts of those who knew him.
“With the passing of Pa Edwin Clark, an era draws to a solemn close,” Akpabio stated. “Today, we do not merely mourn the departure of a man; we grieve the fading of a guiding light, a towering statesman whose voice resonated with wisdom, courage, and unshakable love for Nigeria.”
Clark, who passed away at 97, was a prominent advocate for the Niger Delta and a fearless defender of equity and resource control.
He held various leadership roles, including serving as a federal minister and as an advisor to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Akpabio highlighted Clark’s unwavering commitment to justice and national unity, describing him as “a moral compass” and “a bridge between generations.”
He further stated, “His voice, though now silenced, will echo in the annals of our history, urging us always toward justice, fairness, and national cohesion.”
Reflecting on his personal connection with the late PANDEF leader, Akpabio expressed deep gratitude for Clark’s support, particularly during his bid for the Senate Presidency.
He recalled sending emissaries to check on him a week before his passing, unaware it would be their final interaction.
“His legacy is indelible. His memory will forever stand as a beacon of hope and courage for generations yet unborn,” Akpabio said.
On behalf of his family, his senatorial district, and the Senate, Akpabio extended condolences to Clark’s family, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the people of Delta State, and all Nigerians who admired him.
