Abia State Government has said the 36 federation states can handle state police affairs without any interference from the Federal Government.
Chief Press Secretary to the governor of Abia State, Kazie Uko, in a chat on Tuesday in Umuahia, stated, “Everything that has to do with state police should be without the interference of the federal Police Service Commission.
“Everything that has to do with the establishment of state police has to reside with the state governments, without the interference of the Federal Government in it. That is what I think should happen since we call it state police.
“Therefore, everything that has to do with the establishment of that force or service will have to be domiciled with the state. We run a federation. The state don’t have impact on who the Federal Government appoints as the Inspector General of Police, and that means no string should be attached by the Federal Government to the appointment of the police chief at the state level.
“I don’t understand the recourse to the PSC in the appointment of the head of the state police. What happens to the states Police Service Commission, if the federal Police Service Commission would have to interfere or intervene in the appointment or dismissal of the head of the state police force?
“They are to enact the law and allow the states to handle the appointment or removal of the state police chief. They have to allow the state to handle it and I think the state has the capacity and capability to handle such issue.”
