Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has called on policemen who converted exhibits and vehicles in their care to their personal use to return them immediately.
The police boss, who disclosed this yesterday at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, warned such policemen to return the exhibits or face the consequence.
Edgal charged the deployed Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCIID, Mrs. Yetunde Longe, to carry out the audit of all exhibits in the department and advised any policeman in whose possession any of the exhibit to return such or have himself to blame if caught.
Edgal stated that the audit became necessary, following the command’s intention to reposition the department.
He said: “There must be audit of all the exhibits. Many exhibits, both miscellaneous and vehicular, are now in the hands of some unscrupulous policemen; they have diverted and converted them to their personal use.
“It is a criminal offense and I pray none of the policemen is caught in the act because the consequence will be terrible.”
Edgal also warned that on no account should Investigating Police Officer (IPO) demand mobilisation from any complainant, advising rather that such demand should be passed to sectional heads or the DC, particularly in cases that warranted travelling outside the state to effect suspect’s arrest.
He, however, called on all policemen in the department to try to win back the trust and confidence the public had in the department.
The commissioner also advised those who allegedly falsified their dates of deployment to the department so as to prolong their stay there, to desist from such act, reminding them of the need to be versatile as cops.
In her remark, the DC, Longe, pledged to do everything within her ability to reposition the SCIID, with the support of the men and officers.
While on his way out of the department, Edgal also paid an unscheduled visit to Sabo Yaba Division to inspect the state of the cells and activities of policemen. He expressed satisfaction with the division.
