I want to believe we all heard or saw what happened to Next Cash & Carry Supermart in Abuja.
According to my count and confirmed by the DG NEMA 13 trucks of fire engines were mobilized to the scene of the incident and yet not much items were salvaged. Why this?
1. No government policy to mitigate risks in some of these facilities. Some agencies approved and certified this facility to carry on the business when they knew well risks were not covered in terms of fire protection.
In a facility like this it is compulsory fire suppression systems as sprinkler system, fire hydrant system as well as FM 200(at the critical assets areas like server etc) are installed. Not only install but maintain regularly with log book kept.
Where you have proper installation of external or perimeter hydrant system you may not need all these assemblage of fire trucks because the hydrant system will be more than enough to fight the fire I will explain below.
Explanation: Normally fire hydrant is powered by Fire Pumps which consists of Diesel, Electric and Jockey pumps. This pump takes its source of water from the water reservoir or overhead tanks of large capacity. What is done by us as professional is that the submersible pump inside the industrial borehole that feeds the water reservoir or the overhead tank is connected to the diesel pump which is the only pump that will be working during the fire incident if you want to know while other pumps will not work please come to our training school for enrollment 😂. What this simply means is that as long as you have diesel in the tank of the diesel pump you will not have shortage of water. I can explain more.
Why I take time to explain this is that with our relationship with the ministry of Interior and Fed Fire Service we can have a session with them to advise them on what we think is the best way to minimize all these incidents. We have professionals among and we can begin to add our voices at this stage.
