The former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Gamawa Babayo, has said that he left the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because the opposition party suspended him without granting him a fair hearing.
We had reported that the PDP on Monday, January 7, announced the immediate suspension Senator Babayo.
He was suspended over alleged involvement in anti-party activities, according to the PDP.
The PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement on Monday night that the decision was reached at the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) extra-ordinary meeting held on the 5th of January, 2019.
Babayo, however, accused the main opposition party of not giving him opportunity to defend himself.
He said: “Just an allegation without a fair hearing, they said they have suspended me from office. I want to call on them to check the secretariat. In politics, they should know what is happening on daily basis at the secretariat.”
Channels TV reports that he said the leadership of the PDP would regret the action taken against him as he was not bothered at all.
“I know my rights and I know what the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides on a fair hearing. They did wrong. Though I have no regret, they will regret their action.
“My conscience has been telling me that place is not the best for me. I believe in President Muhammadu Buhari. I believe in what he has been doing for this country right from his military era,” he said.
Babayo’s reaction to the suspension came shortly after meeting with President Buhari at the State House in Abuja.
Femi Adesina, the spokesperson of the president, confirmed the meeting in captions accompanied displayed photographs of Babayo with Buhari in the evening of Tuesday, January 8.
Details of the politician’s meeting with Buhari were still sketchy.
